Where have I been?

Does two weeks of 1 hour physical therapy, 3 x per week count as a workout? it’s all weights….

oh, yeah, so where have i been? not working out much. at all. I have been experiencing some problems with my shoulders… the story goes like this: When I was a teenager, I had occasional pain in my shoulders during swim training. I didn’t make a fuss about it, cause i was 17 and that’s simply the way I am. No fuss. Well, at the end of May after about 1 month of solid training for the triathlon the pain in my left shoulder came back. It’s a weird pain. Not sharp, not acute, more dull and annoying than anything else. I could tell that it was not muscular. I said to myself, “oh no, not my swimming shoulder, hopefully it’ll be okay through the race.” So, I went on about my business. Then I got in that darned car accident. I didn’t notice anything funny at the scene of the accident, except the typical whip lash, and I figured that would go away. Well, later that night and for the next few evenings the pain in my shoulders returned and was worse. I think the shock from the impact exasperated the problem I was already experiencing. Well, then like a dummy I swam that following Saturday afternoon. A long workout too. And guess what! I could barely sleep that night! Argh, it hurt to just pull the covers over my body. I took one of my dad’s celebrex the next day, and that barely cut the pain. So, I took myself to a sports med. doctor. He did an x-ray of my shoulder (left) and said that I have a minor tear in the cartilage and that I have multi-directional instability, and prescribed 4 weeks of PT, 2-3x per week.

The PT said no swimming. Wah! Oh, wait let me back up. The weekend prior to my first PT, I did a workout. Ugh! Wouldn’t you know, that suddenly the pain was in my right shoulder. Now get this, while the pain in the left has subdued, the pain in my right has sustained since that Sunday. (um, June 29th).

We’ve been doing resistance training with bands, some little free-weight exercises, simple push-ups… ha ha! my favorite is the “punching” exercise! Using the resistance band, of course.

Anyway, today I told her that the pain in my right is still there, and has NOT curbed. So, she applied some pain/anti-inflammatory medication using an iontophoresis patch. Crazy! That was weird. It’s an oblong patch, with a plastic gadget in the middle that contains two watch-sized batteries, then she connected some contraption, that looked like a blood-sugar tester, for about 4 minutes. Then I had to leave the patch on for 2 hours. Honestly, I don’t notice a difference.

Can I get some relief!?!

After PT, I went to the park and ran. :) arm.jpg

okay okay

yes, i’ve been away from my training blog the past few weeks.. it all started when my laptop had to be admitted to the operating room. then it was several days before it was discharged and returned to me. Since, then I took two lazy weeks off of training. Got back in the pool last weekend. Oh, yeah I was also in a car accident last week and it really exasperated my “swimmer’s shoulder”… am going to see a sports med. dr. on tuesday.

I attended a Summer Fun Run on the Beach last evening. That was cool. You could choose a 3 mile course, or the 4 miles to the pier and back. I chose the 4 mile run. Silly me. Well, I enjoyed it…. My parents had the kids, while I was at the beach. When I returned the children were all asleep, so I headed to the POOL! at 8:15pm! and swam 1300 meters… I’m a little stiff today.  I’ve also been having some back pain since the accident too. Will have to mention it to the Dr. on tuesday.

Results… omg!

OMG! My swim cumulative place was 35 out of 200!!! I mis-read the sheet on sunday… WOW.. it was my T1 that was 104/200…. Unfortunately, some other results must have shown up because my overall placement was 151/200…. I am super stoked about that swim, and especially because I KNOW I can get it under 8minutes next time… my time on sunday was 9:53…. Bike time was 63:18 (16miles), and my run was 33:56…. oh… overall time for 500swim,16bike,3.1run was 1:51:15 .

Okay, time to get some more stopwatches up and going!

Whoo, hoo! Race #1, complete….and I’m still alive.

Well, today was it! what an exciting experience. wowee! I ranked 148 out of just over 200 individuals…eek. wish it could’ve been better, but but but, my rank at the swim split was 104. I got in front of the crowd in my wave… I decided that I would bust it a little to get out in front during the swim, as it is my stronger discipline. In fact, I caught up with the trailing first womens (experienced) wave as I neared the exit of the water… Now that was cool, coming out of the water for the first time, people cheering, hearing my number 28! being called out as I ran across the time mats… and it was also a nice thing to get to Transition 1 and see a TON of bikes still on the racks….. alright! I thought I can live with THAT! SWEET… slipped into my bike shoes sans socks, pulled off the speedo, and rode the bike in my tyr tri bikini… very cool cause it has built in padding, and I didn’t have to worry about putting on more clothing… Okay, the bike… YIKES! that was killer, HOWEVER very enjoyable too. I sure did get passed alot.. the distance was 16 miles.. my split time was just over 63 minutes… um, that hybrid is a heavy frame… oh wait am I coming up with excuses here? well okay, i’m sure with more experience and a faster bike in the future, I’ll be able to cut the bike time down…. but the most difficult transition is going from bike to running! OMG! I had no idea… I got out of T2, started jogging, and I just thought I was going to die… I ended up walking a major portion of the first half of the run… damn it! I was pissed because I’d been working so hard at accomplishing running 3 miles straight in my training, but it is a totally different “animal” when you’ve just biked your ass off for 16 miles… So, I ran most of the second loop… came in at a total time of approximately, 1:50:50…. I will post my official times and ranks once the results are posted on the website….

Ha ha, now we’re considering registering for the sprint tri in Jacksonville on June 14th…. so much fun, and I’m sure I will only get better with each race…

Going into race weekend…

first I want to say “good luck” to all fellow sweat365 members who also have races this weekend! the rock and roll san diego? to you brave souls may you have endless energy!

well, I think my checklist is complete… tri bikini, running jersey, goggles, bike shoes with yankz, running shoes, new number belt w/ Gu, camel back, clipless pedals switched from my Mtn bike to the hybrid. ( yeah, the bike shop is backed up and can’t get to my bike, so I snatched the pedals and put them on the hybrid.) oh yeah, helmet… think that’s about it…oh yeah towel…. SWEET! ready to roll!

Finite does not exist in the vocabulary of endurance sports.

So, I just started in April… really! I am a baby compared to many in the community of endurance sports. But as I near my first race day, I am already planning the next! I went from calling it “the race”, to calling it “race #1″, as if it sure to be a serial thing. If you see my previous post I’ve already got 26 miles on the brain…. WTF? is wrong with me? (LOL) I saw that cute New Balance commercial last night, the Love/hate commercial? know what I’m talking about? and it SPOKE TO ME!!! 11:30PM, and I suddenly had the urge to slip my tennies on and go.

What does this boil down to? I just love the way I feel now after training since April. Totally different body. My sensory neurons are a happy bunch these days.

Well, the babysitter is on the way over, so I’d better get my gear on. Ciao.

Wondering… if I can go from 0 to 3 in a month, what can i do in 8.5 months?

so, I started wondering and pondering over my achievement of 0 miles to 3 miles in about one month’s worth of training. That’s included about an average of 3 days per week of a running workout. Well, if I could average gaining 3 miles every month for the next “n” amount of months, then could it be possible for me to cover 26 miles in 9 months? (maybe give myself a little more than that.) but really… huh? what if? I mean, all it really takes is scheduling myself for a race, oh, let’s say NEXT June-ish?

Maybe?
